The Yellow Waders Invariant
A heron, in two inches of water, wearing thigh-high rubber boots over legs that did not require them.

We report a heron. The heron is standing in approximately two inches of water. The heron is wearing yellow rubber waders. We make no claim as to why.
The specimen’s legs are, by every available measure, already adequate to the depth encountered. Fifty million years of selection have produced a limb optimised for exactly this puddle. The boots are therefore surplus to requirement, a finding we report without attempting to explain, resolve, or improve.
Observation
At 18:54 the specimen was observed standing motionless in shallow marsh water at the edge of a reed bed. Water depth was estimated at two inches. The specimen wore yellow rubber waders extending above the tarsal joint. Expression: serene. No notes.
Off-frame, a duck was getting wet in the correct and traditional manner. The specimen did not look over.
Methods
The specimen was looked at. This is the entire method. It was not measured, modelled, sampled, weighted, bootstrapped, or compared against a control heron. No stratification was performed. No pooling was attempted, and had it been attempted it would have possessed no jurisdiction over any population whatsoever.
Results
The heron is a heron. The boots are yellow. Both findings held across the entire observation window and are not expected to vary.
Claims not authorized
The following were considered and are not asserted:
- That the boots serve a function. No functional hypothesis survived contact with the water depth.
- That the specimen is unaware the boots are unnecessary. Unsupported; the specimen appears entirely aware and entirely unbothered.
- That the boots represent anything. They represent boots.
- That this generalises to other herons. One heron was observed. One heron is claimed.
- That the reader should draw a lesson from it. Explicitly withheld. No vector fields have been applied to this animal and none will be.

Limitations
Single specimen. Single timepoint. The observer is fond of the specimen and this is disclosed rather than corrected for. The reflection was not independently verified. Whether the duck consented to appear in the discussion section is unknown and was not established.
Conclusion
He has boots.
He is going to wear them.
